Stream Sort
FRI Research Stream Selection Process for Spring 2010
Over the next several weeks, FRI students will have the opportunity to inform themselves about the areas of scientific research represented by our Research Streams. This is necessary as FRI students will be allowed to rank their top four research streams.
Here is the timeline for the rest of the semester:
| 1 | 9/14-10/12 |
Open House Visits and Stream Videos Research methods students should visit the research groups they are most interested in during their posted Open House Hours. Students can ask questions, talk to students, meet the Research Educators and see the labs. Students are also encouraged to check out the stream videos, available on stream web pages or collected here. |
| 2 | 9/24 –9/29 | 2009–2010 Research Stream Handbook distribution Our Research stream handbook outlines our stream offerings for 2009–2010. |
| 3 | 10/1–10/6 |
Information Sessions During the first week of October, students must attend one of four information sessions we provide at which point there will be an overview of the stream sort process, registration instructions and a question/answer period with representatives from each research group. Students who attended a session recieve priority during stream sort. However, students who did not attend are still encouraged to submit a Stream Selection Form (or Waitlist form) and check out our list of FAQs to catch up on information covered during that session. |
| 5 | 10/12–10/16 | Students are sorted into Research Streams based on student preference and research stream availability. The faculty committee responsible for Stream Sort aims for an optimization that assigns students to their top choices while ensuring an equal representation of students from different Research Methods courses in each Stream.
|
| 10/23 | Students are notified of their Stream assignments and the unique number of the course(s) associated with that Stream. |
|
| 10/26 | Students may request Stream Switches, for example if they have a scheduling conflict with a required course. | |
| 6 | 10/26–11/7 | Registration Student register for courses, including Research Stream courses. |
